Along with their enduring focus on health and wellness, Greater Philadelphia YMCA (GPY) is deeply involved in the communities served, beyond the walls of the branches. Current and pressing issues such as food insecurity, youth mentorship and programming along with career/college preparation for teens and pre-teens are among the many ways families are helped to navigate the challenges they face.
The GPY Achievers Program is an academic achievement/career exploration program that assists teens and pre-teens from diverse backgrounds, both socioeconomically and economically, to set and pursue higher education and or career goals. This program provides developmentally-appropriate mentorship and workshop activities designed to give 5th-12th grade youth the tools they need to create their path to college OR a career.
Technology literacy has become a core competency for thriving in society today. The skills associated with tech literacy are now essential for even basic functioning in and access to the educational, economic, social, and civic aspects of life. The primacy of this relationship has never been more apparent than during the COVID-19 pandemic. The current crisis has exposed the extent of inequality that disadvantaged, particularly Black and Hispanic families experience, especially with regard to access to technology and the Internet, and the associated support services. It is essential that society collectively takes concrete steps to ensure equality in educational and developmental opportunities for youth by empowering underserved communities.
Greater Philadelphia YMCA’s goal is to address the needs and challenges facing our society today, particularly in the COVID-19 context. Specifically, we aim to bridge the technological divide that still pervades our communities along socio-economic and racial lines to create a well-trained and tech savvy workforce. In honor of Michael, McGroarty & Co. LLC is partnering with the Greater Philadelphia YMCA to create a lasting legacy in his name that fosters growth and development of our next generation workforce.
